The Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback situation is in much better shape now compared to a year or two ago. While that’s no knock on past players, there’s no question that Geno Smith is an upgrade — though that’s already clear without needing debate.
Adding Smith gives the Raiders a reliable starter, but Aidan O’Connell still holds solid value as a backup. Over the last couple of seasons, O’Connell has gained considerable experience, including a memorable win against the Chiefs on Christmas. Since his rocky rookie debut—where he struggled under pressure against the Chargers—he’s made noticeable progress. If he keeps improving, he could be an appealing starting option for another team once his contract ends.
Beyond Smith and O’Connell, the Raiders lack depth at quarterback, though they’re expected to draft someone later this year—possibly names like Will Howard or Kyle McCord.
Still, O’Connell isn’t content with just being a backup. He’s been putting in serious offseason work in hopes of reclaiming a starting role.
“I’m trying to put on healthy weight,” he told *Vegas Sports Today*. “I’ve been training hard at the facility with the strength and nutrition staff. It’s been a tough stretch, but I believe in our program. I love being around the team and the people here.”
Given the Raiders’ recent history with injuries, there’s a good chance O’Connell will see playing time at some point this season. When that happens, he’ll be ready—just as he was last year.
