Pete Alonso Joins Elite Company with Historic Performance in Mets’ Thrilling Comeback Win

The New York Mets narrowly dodged their second straight series defeat on Wednesday, capping off a six-game road trip with a comeback win over the Miami Marlins, thanks in large part to Pete Alonso’s clutch performance.

Alonso jump-started the offense early, ripping a 114.5 mph RBI double to right-center in the first inning. He followed it up in the fourth with another blistering double—this one clocking in at 113.1 mph—though he was left stranded at third base.Apr 2, 2025; Miami, Florida, USA; New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso (20) reacts after hitting a three-run home run against the Miami Marlins during the eighth inning at loanDepot Park. With time running out, Alonso stepped in once again to change the game’s momentum.

Down 4-1 in the eighth with two outs and runners on first and second, Alonso battled through a nine-pitch at-bat before launching a 113.4 mph home run to straightaway center, tying the game at 4-4. The Mets eventually secured a 6-5 victory in extra innings.

Per MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, Alonso became just the sixth player in the Statcast era to notch three hits with exit velocities over 113 mph in a single game, joining the likes of Oneil Cruz, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Avisaíl García, Nelson Cruz, and Matt Davidson.

Now 30 years old, Alonso was one of the last big-name free agents—especially at first base—to sign this past offseason, ultimately agreeing to a two-year, $54 million deal in February, which includes an opt-out after 2025.

A four-time All-Star, Alonso played a key role in the Mets’ run to the NLCS last October, posting a .999 OPS across 13 postseason games. Still, his regular-season output, the qualifying offer, and the Mets’ luxury tax considerations all factored into his free-agent market.
