The Cincinnati Reds are still in the playoff race, trailing the final National League Wild Card spot by 2.5 games. But after three straight losses, their chances are slipping away fast.
One of the key players for the Reds has been shortstop **Elly De La Cruz**, who earned his second All-Star selection this season and remains one of the team’s top offensive threats. However, he’s been in a slump during the most critical part of the season.
Since the All-Star break, the 23-year-old has struggled at the plate, hitting just **.227** with a **.280 OBP**, a **.609 OPS**, and only **one home run** in 52 games. Defensively, he’s also had issues, leading the majors with **23 errors**, which makes his offensive production even more important.
In response to the team’s recent struggles, **manager Terry Francona**, in his first year leading the Reds, made a significant lineup change ahead of Monday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. After starting **148 of 149 games and consistently batting third, De La Cruz was moved down to seventh** in the lineup for the first time all season.
Until now, De La Cruz had either hit third or made a pinch-hit appearance in every game. The decision signals a shift in urgency from Francona, showing he’s willing to shake things up—even with his star player—in a last-ditch effort to spark the team.
The Reds haven’t made the playoffs since 2020, and that drought may continue if they can’t turn things around soon. De La Cruz, now lower in the order, will look to rediscover his form in hopes of helping Cincinnati stay in the hunt.
