UNEXPECTED STUNNER: MLB Trade Has Cubs Land Braves $212 Million Superstar in ‘Dream’

The 2025 season hasn’t gone according to plan for the Atlanta Braves, which has led to ongoing MLB trade chatter as the July 31 deadline approaches. One especially bold idea has surfaced: the Chicago Cubs swinging a blockbuster deal to land a superstar bat in hopes of boosting their World Series bid.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer suggested such a scenario, proposing that the Cubs pursue Atlanta third baseman Austin Riley—a former World Series winner—as part of a list of “dream trades.” Rymer argues the Braves may need to consider resetting their roster and financial structure, which could involve parting ways with a high-priced star like Riley. If the Braves want to win it all, they'll need Austin Riley's thunderous bat and cannon arm locked and loaded - Atlanta Magazine“All those contract extensions have locked Atlanta into a hefty payroll floor every year,” Rymer wrote in his June 18 piece titled ‘Dream Landing Spots for MLB’s High-Priced, Change of Scenery Stars Post-Devers Trade’. “If they’re going to clear space, Riley is the most logical candidate: he’s 28, earning a lot, and currently in an offensive slump.”

From the Cubs’ standpoint, acquiring Riley would be a significant statement. Chicago leads the NL Central with a 45–29 record after 74 games, but their third base production has been dismal—just a .557 OPS and a single home run. Rymer notes that even a slumping Riley would be a major upgrade.

“Adding Riley also gives them some insurance in case Kyle Tucker departs in free agency,” Rymer adds. “He’s not on Tucker’s level right now, but if Riley rediscovers his All-Star form from 2021–2023, that’s a whole new conversation.”

Could the Braves Actually Trade Riley?

Despite the speculation, it’s unlikely Atlanta trades Riley—hence the “dream” label. A two-time All-Star and one of the team’s few steady performers, Riley has been a cornerstone player. He’s also under contract through 2032 via a 10-year, $212 million deal, with a club option for 2033.

If Atlanta were to consider a move, the motivation would start with finances. Any potential trade would require a substantial return: young talent plus MLB-ready players. The Cubs have a few attractive chips, including top-50 prospects like pitcher Cade Horton, outfielder Owen Caissie, and slugger Moisés Ballesteros.

To meet Atlanta’s demands, Chicago would also likely need to include a veteran or two who can contribute immediately.
