Tragedy Strikes Orioles: 19-Year-Old Prospect Passed Away After ….

The Baltimore Orioles announced on Tuesday night that 19-year-old minor league infielder Luis Guevara has passed away.

While the team did not disclose an official cause of death, MLB.com reported that Guevara was involved in a jet ski accident on Sunday in Sarasota, Florida. This year marked his first playing season in the United States, during which he appeared in 30 games across three levels: 24 games with Class-A Delmarva, four with the FCL Orioles, and two with Double-A Chesapeake.

He last played on Saturday, recording a hit and an RBI in a game for the FCL Orioles at the Pirate City Complex in Bradenton, Florida.

“Luis was a cherished part of our organization, and we are heartbroken by his untimely loss,” said Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias in a statement. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and teammates. We respectfully ask for privacy for those grieving during this difficult time.”

Prior to this year, Guevara spent his first two professional seasons playing for the DSL Orioles in the Dominican Republic.
