As the Vikings kick off their offseason program, they’re preparing to have 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy lead the team as starting quarterback. After missing his rookie year due to a knee injury, McCarthy says he’s now fully recovered.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed on Monday that McCarthy won’t be limited in spring activities and praised the young QB for the work he’s done behind the scenes.
“J.J. is constantly working,” O’Connell said. “This spring setup is ideal for where he’s at—focusing on classroom learning, physical training, and continuing to build on what he’s done. Now that the team is back, he’ll keep progressing, and we’ll get him on the field for some throwing sessions before OTAs and minicamp begin.”
O’Connell emphasized that McCarthy’s development plan is structured, and the quarterback is ready to take it on.
From a physical standpoint, O’Connell said McCarthy has shown the ability to make all the necessary throws during his rehab, and he’s had several intense throwing sessions.
“Now it’s about working with teammates, refining the details, and getting reps that help us see where he excels and where we can help him grow,” said O’Connell.
Development is still key, but now the focus shifts to consistency and applying what McCarthy has learned in a team environment. With veteran center Ryan Kelly joining and familiar skill players around him, McCarthy has a strong support system.
“This stage is about more than just hitting checkpoints,” O’Connell added. “It’s about daily growth and applying everything he’s learned. Even without playing last year, J.J. has stayed engaged and worked hard. That’s why I believe he’s ready to hit the ground running.”
