Virginia Tech Locks In Another Highly Versatile 5-star Top prospect From Transfer Portal.

Following the announcements by Kyron Drones and Pop Watson that they would remain at Virginia Tech beyond 2024, the Hokies seemed secure at quarterback. The program also brought in early enrollees A.J. Brand and Kelden Ryan, two promising dual-threat quarterbacks.

However, Virginia Tech made an unexpected move by adding former Oklahoma State quarterback Garret Rangel. The 6’2″, 205-pound Texas native and former four-star recruit played three seasons for the Cowboys,

Rangel hit the transfer portal after spring practice and reunites with Hokies offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery, who recruited him during his time at Tulsa.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Rangel isn’t expected to start—Drones remains the clear QB1 if healthy. After dealing with injuries and undergoing a recent procedure, head coach Brent Pry assured Drones will be ready for fall camp. Rangel is likely to compete with Watson for the backup role. Watson impressed last season in his two starts, particularly in the finale against Virginia, where he threw for 254 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score.

Though Brand and Ryan are promising, starting true freshmen is a stretch. Redshirt freshman Davi Belfort has transferred, clearing space in the QB room.

Rangel’s addition appears to be more about providing experienced depth behind an injury-prone starter than signaling doubt in Watson. His arrival wraps up a busy portal season for Virginia Tech, who added 11 transfers this spring to complement the 19 from the winter window.
